Sims, a former resident of this city and a member of the famous Morton rifles, which occurred at Oak, Nebraska. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. F.E. Marley and Mrs. Rebecca Slater, of this city. He was well known in Hartford City. ====================== The Oak Leaf (Oak, NE), Thursday, October 12, 1916; pg. 1 OBITUARY James Manson Sims was born Feb. 12, 1837, near Hartford City, Indiana, and died Oct. 2, 1916, near Oak, Neb., at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 20 days. He was married to Elizabeth Jane Neal April 14, 1864. To this union was born 9 children, 7 girls and 2 boys, all living and present at funeral. One sister, Mrs. Nancy Hudson of Clarinda, Iowa, who was not able to be here, 35 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and a host of friends and other relatives mourn his departure. The following is his writing a few days before his death: A short history of my past, I was born in Blackford county (sic), Indiana, near Hartford City in the year 1837, Febr 12. My father was a Methodist minister 50 years and I have been a minister 50 years. I have preached the gospel in its purity from the bottom of my heart to the best of my ability also I farmed 50 years. I soldiered 4 years, all through the rebellion. I soldiered one year in the 12th regiment Indiana volunteer infantry, also in the 34th Indiana volunteers 3 years and over. I was married during the war to Elizabeth Jane Neal and we have raised 9 children all, grown to womanhood and manhood and all living today. I think lots of them. All grew up with love and harmony. Funeral services at Mt. Zion church (sic) Wednesday Oct. 4th, Rev. Cresap officiating. Interment at Mt. Zion cemetery (sic).
