Description	:	A son of John M. & Mary E. (Jones) Roberts. The mother was a native of Craven county & the father of Edenton, Chowan county, N. C. The latter removed to Norfolk, & in 1816 came to Newbern & died in 1862, his wife surviving him until 1874. Their surviving children: Rev. John J. Roberts of New York city; Rev. Stephen C. The Rev. S. C. Roberts' sister, Susan S. Roberts Guion, died in 1880. On 23 November 1858, he m. Annie Patrick Harding (b. Jan. 3, 1839, d. March 25, 1874), dau. of Nathaniel Harding (Memorial# 79664789)& Elizabeth Ann Patrick (Memorial# 79664873); was ordained priest, 21 August 1859 at Grace Church, Morganton, NC. He simultaneously served at non-resident rector of St. James in Lenoir. " Unlike his predecessors, Mr. Roberts had no private fortune and had to support his family on the meagre stipend which the two small parishes were able to pay him; the story that the ladies of St. James' often filled his saddlebags with provisions "on the sly" is quite likely true. In 1867 he removed to the diocese of Virginia to become rector of Rivanna parish in Fluvanna county; the last years of his ministry, beginning in December 1871, were spent as rector of Emmanuel Protestant Episcopal Church, Chestertown, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland." (9) George Herbert, b. 9 Oct 1873, d. 11 May 1874. On 20 October 1875, he m. Harriet Tilden Westcott, dau. of Nicholas Godfrey Westcott & Mary Elizabeth Tilden. Harriet d. on 31 July 1879, in her 33rd year at the St. Paul's rectory, in Chestertown. On 09 May, 1889, he married Miss Lottie R. Spencer, who survived him. His obituary in the Chestertown Transcript, Thursday, November 16, 1899 stated he was educated at the University of North Carolina followed by theological education at Nashotah, Wisconsin. Six children survived him: Mrs. Colin F. Stam, Mrs. R.H. Collins and Miss Susie Roberts, of Chestertown; Mrs. Joseph Archbell, of Charlotte, N.C.; Mr. John N. Roberts, of Tennessee, and Guion Roberts, Esq, of New York City. Arrangements were made to bring his remains to Chestertown by steamer the evening of the 16th with funeral services planned at Emmanuel P.E. Church at 2:30 o'clock on Friday; interment in Chester cemetery. The November 23, 1899 edition of the Chestertown Transcript reported that the bearers had been Eben F. Perkins, William S. Walker, Dr. W. Frank Hines, Richard D. Hynson, Thomas G. Wroth, Lewin W. Wickes, Wm. W. Beck and George B. Westcott. Mr. J. E. Ferguson was the funeral director. The deceased was chaplain of No. 117 Amicable Lodge I.O.O.F., of Chestertwon, and was also a Mason. An article in The Chestertown Transcript dated Saturday, March 3, 1906, page 3, reports that the Rev. Roberts became rector at Chester Parish on February 7, 1871.
