IRELAND DIED SUDDENLY THIS MORNING Well known Methodist minister in usual health yesterday Rev. W. Brooks Ireland, 78, retired Methodist minister, passed away suddenly this morning at his home, 303 West Washington street. Mrs. Ireland discovered her husband to be in serious condition and had just called neighbors when death came about 2:00 a.m. Rev. Ireland was born October 14, 1864 near Brookville. He spent his entire live (sic. life) in this section of Iowa. His early manhood was spent on a farm. In 1893 he was accepted on trial as a minister in the Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, Jessie and one son, Raymond M. Ireland, now in the U.S. service. Two sisters, Mrs. N. E. Gardner of Downers Grove, Ill. and Mrs. Nettie Vance of Ava, Kansas (sic) and one brother J. E. Ireland, Fairfield, survive him. Also surviving are two grandchildren Keith and Raymond Ireland, Jr. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. from the Fairfield First Methodist church. Dr. M. A. Gable will have charge of the service assisted by Rev. G. W. Baker, Eldon. The address will be made by Dr. U.S. Smith of New London. The body was brought to the Weston Behner Funeral home. His first appointment was at Unionville, Iowa, 1893 to 1894. Following this he served the following churches, Cedar, Lovilla, Durham, Mount Union, West Point, Drakesville, Pulaski, Libertyville, Muscatine South, Kellogg, Donnellson, Fairfield circuit, Wayland, Mt. Union, Malcom, Thornburg, Fremont, Packwood, Lovilla and Milton. He was retired in 1934. Rev. Ireland was admitted to the former Iowa Conference of the Methodist church on trial in 1893. He was given his full membership in 1895. Since his retirement in 1934, Rev. and Mrs. Ireland have made their home here in Fairfield. --------------- Fairfield Ledger Saturday April 18, 1942 Pg. 3 Col. 4 OBITUARY WILLIAM BROOKS IRELAND In the pioneer days as the great Civil war was at its turning point in favor of the Union there was born in a humble farmer's cottage of Jefferson county a baby boy and the fond parents christened him William Brooks Ireland. The years have come and gone but the story of that life of which we speak today has been written large in the lives of hundreds in southeast Iowa where he spent his entire life. He was one of eight children born to the pioneer parents John A. and Elizabeth Ireland. Early in life he knelt at a Methodist altar and gave his heart to God and from that time it was a fixed conviction that he ought to preach the Gospel. However like many others he tried to contest the call until another consecration turned the current of his convictions into a full tide that swept away all excuses and he began his preparation for the work of the ministry. He attended Parsons college for a time and then determined to go to our own Methodist school at Mt. Pleasant so he entered Iowa Wesleyan and continued his studies. In his junior years he was urged by the district superintendent to accept a pastorate and so was married to one of his classmates Miss Jessie Hughes and the bishop assigned him and his bride to the work at Unionville and thus he began a long and fruitful ministry. He was an evangelistic preacher and held special meeting on every charge and as a result scores were converted to the Christian way of life under his preaching and leadership. For over forty years he and his good wife labored together here in southeast Iowa carrying the message of the love of God to men, women and children. His last regular pastorate was at Milton and from there he retired and moved to Fairfield in 1934. Since that time he has never ceased his church activities but had been called upon again and again to conduct and assist in the services of the church. Gifted with a fine command of English, a splendid voice, and being a man of deep devotion his preaching and his prayers were always inspirational and helpful. He loved to sing and his fine tenor voice was always heard voicing his praise to our God from whom all blessings flow. In the course of his ministry churches and parsonages were builded (sic) and repaired and hundreds will arise to bear testimony to his fine leadership in every good work. Brother Ireland was a man of strong convictions, but of a lovable disposition. He was always calm and yet courageous, peaceful and yet progressive. He made many friends and his upright stalwart character was respected and admired by all who knew him. He leaves his devoted wife and one son the latter being in the armed forces of our country. Rev. and Mrs. Ireland were in their fiftieth years of wedded life and were counting on celebrating their golden wedding next September 15th. He was active to the very last for his indomitable will kept him going many times when a less sturdy character would have given up. He and his good wife were always in their pew at church, and his last evening on earth he spent in the church happy in the association of friends and neighbors. The end came quite unexpectedly in the early hours of Wednesday, April 8th when a heart attack carried him away from the scenes of earth to be at home with his beloved Master whom he had served so well. Besides the wife and one son he leaves two sisters Mrs. Nannie Gardner of Downers Grove, Ill., and Mrs. Nettie Vance of Ava, Mo. (sic), also one brother John E. Ireland of this city. There are also two grandsons, Ernest Keith Ireland with the Fairfield contingent in Ireland and Raymond Jr. in Camp Blanding, Florida. The community will miss brother Ireland's kindly face, pleasant greeting and droll humor. We will carry with us precious memories of his beautiful prayers and helpful testimony of the grace of God - and above all we will know that he made his hands eternal in the heavens.
