Concordia Daily Kansan, Friday, Sept. 17, 1915, page 2: Butler Richard Butler was born in Thomas, Kilkenny county, Ireland, December 7, 1836 and died at his home in this city, Friday, September 10, 1915, age 78 years, 9 months and 3 days. When three months old he came with his parents to Syracuse, New York, where he remained until he was 16 years old when he removed to Wisconsin locating near Madison. On February 2, 1863, at Madison, Wisconsin, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Cummings. To this union thirteen children were born, five having preceded the father to the great beyond. In the year of 1878 they came to Kansas and settled on a farm four miles west of Glasco, and remained on the farm until two and a half years ago (when) he gave up farm life and with his family moved into town where he lived until his death overtook him. Mr. Butler was well known and well liked and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He was a good husband, a kind and loving father and this community loses a good citizen from her midst. Mr. Butler had not been very well for about four weeks, but had been up and around every day. The day of his death he ate dinner with the family as usual, but he did not feel very well. About four o'clock Friday afternoon he was standing by the sofa when the end came and he fell over on the floor dead. Help was called immediately, but to no avail. The spirit had taken flight and Mr. Butler was no more for this earth. Besides his wife Mr. Butler leaves to mourn his death eight children who were all present at his funeral. They are: Mrs. Ecels Clark, south of Glasco; Mrs. Mike Walter, Beloit; Mrs. John Downey, west of Glasco; Mrs. Henry Deneke, Beloit; James Butler, west of town; Mrs. Hal Pilcher, Delphos; Misses Sadie and Kate Butler who are at home. Also twenty grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of friends. The funeral service was held Monday morning, September 13th, at the Catholic church of this place, Father McErlean of Delphos having charge of the service and interment was made in the St. Mary's cemetery.
