Read More	Glasco Sun, Cloud County, Kansas, Aug. 19, 1920, page 1: THOMAS BUTLER DEAD Aged Pioneer Passed Away at His Home Here Sunday Morning The community mourns the passing of one of her venerable citizens, Thomas Butler, who for more than half a century has enjoyed the peace and prosperity of the Solomon Valley, died at his home in this city early Sunday morning. Mr. Butler was one of the early pioneers of this community, having been among the faithful few who withstood the hardships and discomforts of the early days of this beautiful old valley of ours, that we might enjoy the fruits of its fertility. He came to this community in 1870, and the fifty years that he spent here have been very productive ones. He was then a comparatively young man, rugged and enthusiastic, and the many well cultivated and improved farm homes of the Solomon Valley stand as eternal monuments to the faith and endurance of those early pioneers, of whom Mr. and Mrs. Butler were numbered. The story of Mr. Butler's life is not unlike that of many others of the good old Irish stock, who settled in this vicinity, to whom honesty, industry and sobriety were an established code, and we are pleased to point out the heritage of the community in having such characteristics as he, from which to mold their destiny, and to whose accomplishments we may point with justifiable pride. Thomas Butler was born October 28, 1831, at Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ireland, and came, with his parents, to this country when three years old, settling first in New York state. A few years later they moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where he was educated and grew to manhood. In the early fifties, he with his older brother, Martin, went to California, those being the gold fever days, and took up mining. He spent about six years there, returning home in 1858 to take up farming, which he did until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he was one of the first to offer his services to his country. He was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Malone, June 6, 1864, at Waunkee, Wisconsin, just after he had returned from honorable service in the war. He joined the Third Wisconsin Cavalry Volunteers at the beginning of the war, and served three years and eleven months, having enlisted as a private, and won steady advancement until the close of the war, when he held a commission as Second Lieutenant. Mr. and Mrs. Butler and their three children, Martin, Mary and John, in company with the Pierce Butler, Michael Dillon, James Hurley and John Downey families, arrived at Glasco June 1, 1870. Mr. Butler and his family homesteaded on a farm 5 miles southeast of Glasco, which they farmed in 1907, when they moved to Glasco to reside. Many interesting stories might be told of the hardships and experiences of these pioneers, how, coming into this country just two months after one of the most severe Indian raids, it was necessary to break their ground, and do their farm work and at the same time look to the protection of their families from a recurrence of the savage attacks of the red skins. For the first few years after they settled here it was necessary to go overland to Junction City for supplies, lumber, etc. A few years later Clay Center was their supply point, then shortly after, supplies could be had at Solomon, and in '78 the railroad was built up the valley and relieved them of the necessity of overland travel. Mr. Butler was a lifelong member of the Catholic church, an active member of the G.A.R., of which organization he was Quarter Master until failing health made it impossible for him to attend. He was a stockholder and director of the First National Bank, and until three years ago was vice-president of that institution. Mr. Butler is survived by all of his children, Martin, Mrs. Hugh Reed, John, Miss Anna and Richard. Mrs. Butler passed away on March 29, 1910. Besides his immediate family, there survive him, his brother Richard's wife and family, the family of his sister, Mrs. Ryan of Minneapolis, Minnesota, nineteen grandchildren and unnumbered friends. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church, Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, Father Hennessey of Jamestown, officiating. A choir of young lady members of the church furnished special music for the occasion. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery.
