Dick was born on Sept. 18, 1926, in Cedar Rapids to Anton and Clara (Halbur) Batenhorst. He graduated from Cedar Rapids High School in 1945 and worked a variety of jobs in that area. He married Joan Kennedy on Sept. 30, 1950, with whom he recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. After living in Aurora and Kearney, he moved to North Platte in 1962. Dick was the parts manager for Callahan Implement, which became Kaschke Company, from 1962 until his retirement in 1995. His knowledge of John Deere parts and his customers’ equipment were a valuable part of his contribution to “the store.” Dick was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years, serving a two-year term as Nebraska state deputy. He also was a member of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus. He served on parish councils and Catholic school boards at St. Patrick’s Parish in North Platte and St. James Parish in Omaha. He played an active role on the building committee at St. James Church in Omaha, which made the decision to build the church from which he is being laid to rest. Dick loved spending time with his family, manicuring a perfect lawn, gardening, sitting on his deck while enjoying an occasional Bud and grilling steaks. He was an avid sports fan with a special affinity for the Creighton men’s basketball team, the University of Nebraska football and volleyball teams and his most recent sports interest — the Kansas City Royals. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Roman, Henry and Robert. Dick is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter, Nadine (Bob) Karr, of Omaha; sons, Gary (Ellen), of Omaha, Russ (Mary), of Hastings, and Greg (Mary Lou), of O’Fallon, Missouri; grandchildren, Heidi (Adam) Sleper, of Wheaton, Illinois, Jaime (Justin) Short, of Omaha, Julie Batenhorst, of San Francisco, Patrick (Rose) Batenhorst, of Austin, Texas, and Tony (fiancé Sarah Benal) Batenhorst, of Lincoln; great-grandchildren, Kalen, Sabrina, Isabelle and Cameron Short and Jamison and Clara Sleper; sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Don White, of Burbank, California; other sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at St. James Catholic Church in Omaha with Father Tom Weisbecker officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha. Wake service will follow at 5 p.m. at John A. Gentleman 72nd Street Chapel, Omaha, which is in charge of arrangements.
