Description	:	Richard was born in Trwyn, Merionethshire, Wales on July 30, 1845. He was well educated. He worked in a tannery, and later had his own. He married Catherine Evans in 1867. They had six children before leaving Wales; Dave, Evan Allen, Milton, John, Jane, and Eldon. A daughter Edith was born in South Dakota. Richard and family, along with his brother Evan, arrived in America in May 1883. They stayed with a relative, Evan Newell, the first winter. He worked in a tannery, and later had his own. He married Catherine Evans in 1867. They had six children before leaving Wales; Dave, Evan Allen, Milton, John, Jane, and Eldon. A daughter Edith was born in South Dakota. Richard and family, along with his brother Evan, arrived in America in May 1883. They stayed with a relative, Evan Newell, the first winter. Richard got the W 1/2 of Sec. 8 of 113-66 in Gilbert twp., Hand County, SD. He and his sons began building two houses and buildings for stock. Richard taught the children at home until a school was built the following year. He served on the township board and school board for many years. They milked cows, churned butter and shipped the finished products. Many of their cows were lost during the 1888 blizzard. Some winters he and his sons would work in Sioux Falls, although some of them would always stay home to work the place. In 1900, Richard bought a large house in St. Lawrence and moved it out to the farm. They had it on wagons, with 16 horses on the front and 16 behind pushing. In July 1902, Catherine became ill and died two days later. It was determined later it was from appendicitis. Richard had a sale in 1908, and later made his home with his two daughters, Jane, who married Robert Conkey, and Edith who married Gordon Conkey. Richard never drove a car, perferring to drive the horse and buggy. He died in 1931 at age 86.
