Canaris who lost his life in an automobile accident at Waipahu, Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. James W. Marlin, pastor of the First Methodist Church and Rev. Paul Textor, pastor of the Methodist Church at Trenton were the officating ministers. Mrs. Max Stein played the organ. The pallbearers were: Arthur Campbell, Jay Hill, Dale Christner, Kenneth Crile, Quentin Bentley, and Willard Loeffler. Military rites were held at the Green Mound cemetery with the U. S. Navy Reserve of Burlington serving as honor guard and color bearers and members of the V.F.W. Post No. 2561 of Mt. Pleasant acting as firing squad. Richard Leroy Canaris, son of the late Peter G. Canaris, and Laura Clawson Canaris Hinkle, was born in Burlington, Iowa, October 3, 1922. He grew to manhood in Henry county, Iowa, on the farm near Wayland. In 1940, he graduated from the Glidden, Iowa high school, and in September 1941, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy, at San Francisco, Calif., transferring to Alameda, then to Pearl Harbor, engaging in major combat, during World War II, in the South Pacific, as Aviation Machinist Mate. In 1945, he was united in marriage with Norma R. White, of Rome, Iowa. Their early married life was spent at Pensacola, Fla. In 1951 a daughter, Kristella Ann, was born to them, in Honolulu, Hawaii. On April 5, 1952, he lost his life in the line of duty, in a motor accident near Barbers' Point, on the Islands. Survivors are his wife, and baby daughter, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter S. Hinkle, of Wayland, a sister, Georgiana C. Fredrick, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, 3 half brothers, Robert L. Hinkle and Peter Hinkle, Jr., of Mt. Pleasant, and John B. Hinkle, U.S.M.C., San Diego, Calif., and 2 step-sisters, Mrs. Carmen Guinn, and Mrs. Marcella Graber of Mt. Pleasant. His grandmother, Mrs. Alburta P. Clawson, of Lake City, and an aunt Mrs. Emma C. Johnson of Lake City, and an uncle, Frank P. Clawson of Cedar Falls, survive, besides 15 nieces and nephews and 4 cousins.
