The obituary inadvertently listed the father's first and middle names in reverse order in one paragraph, and listed the names of three children with variations from the obituary for his wife Betty. The obituary mentioned a marriage/divorce with a Carrie Messer - don't know her status or the status of any of their children. Any clarification would be appreciated. ------------ Fairfield Ledger Thursday October 26, 1972 Pg. 8 Col. 6 Former Resident Of City Killed In 2-Car Crash Last rites are pending for Richard Matthias, 39, former Fairfield resident who was fatally injured in a traffic accident east of Des Moines early this morning. He is the son of Vernon N. Matthias, 808 W. Depot; and a brother of Pete Matthias and his sister Betty who reside at the same address. They said this morning they had received no word concerning funeral arrangements. Des Moines authorities said Matthias was fatally injured when he was apparently slowing his pickup truck to pick up a hitchhiker. The said the truck swerved on U.S. 6 east of Des Moines and collided headon with a car driven by Craig Love, 22, Des Moines. Love was hospitalized with serious injuries. Matthias was taken to a hospital in Des Moines where he died shortly after his arrival. Richard Matthias was born in Van Buren County, the son of Nelson Vernon (sic) and Loal Agnes Miller Matthias. He lived in Van Buren County until moving to Fairfield in 1943. He lived in Fairfield during the past summer and moved to Des Moines three months ago. Richard Matthias was married to Carrie Messer, and later divorced. Survivors include his father; also six children, Ricky Lee, Cindy and Connies, all living in Illinois; Billy (sic), Tresa (sic))and Richy (sic), all of Des Moines. Other survivors include three brothers, Pete Matthias, Fairfield; Leonard, Eldon; and Verle; one sister, Betty Matthias, Fairfield; his grandmother, Mrs. William Matthias, Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his mother, two brothers and a sister.
