Description	:	Richard Christy, prominent businessman and Crisfield native, was born in Crisfield, Maryland on February 2, 1914, the son of Clarence A. and Olive Sterling Christy. At an early age, he became associated with his father in the George A. Christy Company, becoming partner in 1937, then President and owner in 1952. The George A. Read More	Richard Christy, prominent businessman and Crisfield native, was born in Crisfield, Maryland on February 2, 1914, the son of Clarence A. and Olive Sterling Christy. At an early age, he became associated with his father in the George A. Christy Company, becoming partner in 1937, then President and owner in 1952. The George A. Christy Company, founded in 1890 by Richard Christy's grandfather, were packers and shippers of seafood, employing at one time more than 200 workers at three plants on Jersey Island in Crisfield. Under Richard Christy's management, Christy's seafood became one of the nation's top 10 suppliers, diversifying to include the sale of frozen soft crabs, clams, fresh and frozen oysters and shad roe. Richard Christy's other business interests included Christy's Marine Railway, which built and repaired fishing vessels, and the Christy Ice House, which sold ice in bags to area users. Recognized as a leader in the industry, Mr. Christy was consulted frequently regarding the state of the seafood industry and the health of the Bay. He was knowledgeable about all aspects of the seafood industry, including the environmental impact of MSX and Dermo, diseases devastating the oyster population. During World War II, Richard Christy served in the United States Navy as boatswain's mate, first class, and saw service in the Pacific at Saipan, Tinian, Guam, and Okinawa, serving with the 301st Construction Battalion of the United States Navy Seabees. A Navy veteran, Mr. Christy's memberships included Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8274 and Stanley Cochrane Post 16, American Legion, the Crisfield Chamber of Commerce and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Crisfield Lodge of Elks 1044. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Mr. Christy was twice married. His first wife was Elva Nelson, daughter of Vernon and Marie Nelson, who died in 1979. They were the parents of two children. Richard Christy died Tuesday, September 15th, 1981, in his hometown of Crisfield, following a long illness. He was 67 years of age. He was survived by his second wife, June Miles Christy of Crisfield; one daughter, Dianne Christy Tull; a son, Richard Wayne Christy, Jr., of Houston, Texas; a sister, Donna Christy Lee, of Annapolis, Md.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
