Editors Ledger: - Riley Jones,, an old resident and pioneer citizen, died at his home two miles south of Veo, Thursday, February 3d. He was taken ill about six weeks ago, and, after everything was done that physician and kind friends could do, his life passed peacefully out. Mr. Jones was in his seventy-fourth year. Fifty-eight years of his life were spent in Penn township (sic. in Jefferson county, Iowa). He was a kind neighbor, a loving father, and affectionate husband, loved and respected by all who knew or came in contact with him. He knew by actual experience what life on the frontier meant, being fully acquainted with all the rough and smooth places which a pioneer had to pass over. Mr. Jones was born in Morgan county, Ind., June 13th, 1824, and came to Jefferson county with his parents in 1839. He was married to Elizabeth Hoskins in 1844. Ten children were born to them, of whom six are living, and all except Newton of Idaho were present at the funeral. His wife died January 16th, 1891. The funeral was held Saturday from the Friends' church in Pleasant Plain, services conducted by Rev. L. Maria Deane. Interment was made in the cemetery adjacent to the church.
