Esau, 80 years of age, of Beatrice, NE. passed away at his home Tuesday morning, March 23, 2004. He was born on June 6, 1923 in Beatrice, NE. and lived and farmed on the same farm near Beatrice his entire life until he moved into Beatrice, NE. in 2001. He was a 1940 graduate of the Beatrice High School in Beatrice, NE. He and Ruth Hamm were married on May 10, 1946 in Beatrice, NE. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church, R. Beatrice, NE. and was a past member and secretary of the church board, had been on the Building Committee, and was a former Sunday school teacher. He was a past member of the Beatrice Community Hospital board of directors and had served as their secretary for many years; former leader of the Best Foot Forward 4-H Club; past member of the Hoag Elevator Board; Freeman School Board and the Gage County Fair Board. He enjoyed farming and playing cards. His family and friends were very important to him. Survivors include his wife Ruth M.; sons Kent Esau and his wife Patricia of Beatrice, NE. and Robert W. Esau and his wife Barbara of Beatrice, NE.; daughter Ann Esau Kerl and her husband Jerald W. of Lecanto, Florida; 3 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; several step great grandchildren; sister Martha Goossen and her husband Louis of Beatrice, NE.; sister in law Betty Esau of Beatrice, NE.; brothers in law Edgar Hamm and his wife Dorothy of Norfolk, NE. and William J. Hamm and his wife Irene of Beatrice, NE.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Adolph and Gertrude (Penner) Esau; and brother Harvey G. Esau. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, March 26, 2004 at the First Mennonite Church, R. Beatrice, NE. with Reverend Florence and Reverend Weldon Schloneger officiating. Interment will be held at 12:30 P.M. Friday at the Mennonite Cemetery, R. Beatrice, NE. The body will lie in state Thursday from 9:00-9:00 and Friday from 9:00-11:30 at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice, NE. and not at the church. A memorial has been established to Bethel College and Mennonite Central Committee with Willard Penner and William Goossen in charge. Messages of condolence may be sent to [email protected] They will be forwarded to the family. The Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice is in charge of the services.
