Sarah Elizabeth Wise Gayle -- the youngest child of Joshua and Lizzie Billups Gayle -- was born November 30, 1855. Bettie Wise was second cousin to Lucy Gayle (daughter of Zelotes Gayle) who married Columbus Anderton. On October 1875, she married James Bennet "Bennie" White. Together, they purchased 47.6 acres of her father's land, situated on a peninsula across the creek from "Edgewater", where she was raised -- later known as "Bloomsdale". Bennie was a farmer all of his life and he and Bettie Wise raised six of their eight children to adulthood. This family will be discussed in further detail in the White section. After Bennie died suddenly in 1910, Bettie Wise continued to live at Bloomsdale with her youngest daughter, Baby, even after Baby married Stanley Anderton in 1917. Bettie Wise is remembered as being slender and rigid, with a very erect posture and always wore a long dress. Dorothy Anderton Gayle remembers Bettie Wise coming to visit her mother, Ora, in a horse and buggy -- driving it herself. Bettie Wise died on July 31, 1931 at home after suffering a cerebral embolism, probably caused by the heart disease that had troubled her for several years. Several of her grandchildren were staying there with her that summer and they remember it well. Howard, Jr. and Roland were out in the creek on Howard's boat and they saw Baby run out in the yard, frantically waving a white dishtowel. My mother Elizabeth remembers the funeral, the casket being brought out through the parlor window and then the burial over in Cousin Walter's yard -- where Bettie Wise was raised. They remember that she always wore long dresses and had her hair done up on top of her head. I have only seen three photographs of her as an adult and in both she looks to be a very determined, tough lady, despite her small stature. Her children and grandchildren were all devoted to her. I am fortunate enough to have been given a few of her things -- a set of six cordial glasses, some odd pieces of crystal, two beautiful jelly glasses with glass lids, and the most treasured of all, a pendant made from one of her ornate sterling silver spoon handles, engraved with a "W". Since I am "kind of" her name sake – Elizabeth Gayle -- and I married a "Weiss" which means "White" in German -- they mean a lot to me.
