He was born in Hamilton on June 21, 1897, a son of William and Eleanor Hannah Gardner and received his education in the local public schools. Gardner, 70, 529 N. Seventh St., died unexpectedly at his residence Wednesday afternoon. He was born in Hamilton on June 21, 1897, a son of William and Eleanor Hannah Gardner and received his education in the local public schools. He married Hilda Tegeder and the couple had three children. Mrs. Gardner preceded him in death in 1927. Later he married Mary Yater Blattau in Falmouth, Ky., on April 6, 1929. Four children were born to this union. Mr. Gardner enlisted in the United States Army on July 1, 1916, and served four years during World War I and was honorably discharged June 4, 1920 with rank of private first class. He served with Troop G and the 3rd Calvary and served in France for two years. At one time Mr. Gardner served as superintendent of highway maintenance in Butler County and later as director of urban renewal of Hamilton. "Business Agent" A cement mason, Mr. Gardner had been active in labor circles and served as business representative for the Plasterers and Cement Masons Union. He was a past president of the Butler County Building Trades Council. "Bob" Gardner was a cheerful and warm person and proud to be a part of the work of veteran organizations. His untiring work in behalf of veterans made him many friends. He was devoted to his home and family and later grandchildren enriched his family circle. Mr. Gardner gave endlessly of his time to further work of veterans. He was active in Barracks 339, Veterans of World War I, and had served as commander of the group. He served as commander of Campbell Gard Post 1069, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and served on the building committee of the group when the organization moved to the present post home. Several times he served as junior and senior vice commander of the group. "All State Award" Mr. Gardner was recipient of the All State Commander Award of the VFW, an honor bestowed three times during the history of post 1069. He was a charter member of Hamilton Chapter 15, Disabled American Veterans, and a charter memeber of the Military Order of Cooties. He leaves his wife, Mary Gardner, Hamilton; two sons, Henry Gardner and Robert Gardner Wehr, both of Hamilton; five daughters, Mrs. Robert (Bonnie) Crouch, Mrs. Roy (Dorothy) Abney, Mrs. Thomas (Betty) Burns, and Mrs. Edward (Margie) Burns, all of Hamilton, and Mrs. Billy C (Patricia) Wilson, Cincinnati; 24 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Robert Brown [sic], Hamilton; two halfbrothers, Ora Gardner and Ben Gardner, both of Batavia; other relatives and many friends. "Preceded in Death" He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepson Eugene William Blattau, two brothers Walter and Arthur Gardner and a halfbrother, George Gardner. Full military services will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Colligan Funeral Home, 437 S. Third St., with Douglas Smith, pastor of the North Seventh St. Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday after 4 p.m. Combined services of the VFW, World War I, Barracks and Order of Cooties will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
