He had been confined to his bed for the past five months at the home of his son, Samuel S. Elliott, but had not suffered any specific illness, for the weakness of old age was upon him. Robert Gaston Elliott was born in Cottage Grove, Union county, Indiana, July 23. 1828. Of South Carolina parentage, his parents left the south because of religious antipathy to slavery. In 1850 he graduated from Miami University of Indiana. It was at this institution that he met Josiah. Miller, a native of South Carolina. These two young men formed a partnership to publish a paper in Kansas in the interest of freedom. They moved to Lawrence, Kan., and in 1854 and established The Kansas Free State, which was one of the first papers, if not the very first, established by the anti-slavery people in Kansas. It was perhaps the oldest paper published in Kansas territorial times and was considered conservative, but uncompromising. Holding that position among free state publications, it was naturally included among those Lawrence institutions marked for destruction in the raid of Sheriff Jones on May 21, 1856. The paper was not re-established after its career was cut short by the first pro-slavery raid which Lawrence After coming to Kansas in 1854, Elliott took a lead in the Fremont campaign of 1856, and was elected to the territorial legislature of 1857-1858. In 1860 Kansas suffered from a severe drought and he became one of the secretaries of a territorial relief convention which was held at Lawrence in November 1860. He served on the state Board of Agriculture 1867-1869, and was elected superintendent of public printing in 1857. After his term as senator he acted as deputy in the office of the Douglas county treasurer, and later was elected county treasurer. Elliott was also one of first regents of the University of Kansas. He later as editor of the Lawrence Journal from 1886 to 1890, when the paper was owned by Colonel O. E. Learnard. It is believed that he was the last surviving member of the party which came to Lawrence in tho fall of 1854 to settle on the townslte.
