Bob was born on May 29, 1943, to Helen and Oren Kelly at Aurelia, Iowa. After attending school mostly at Larrabee, Iowa, he graduated from Sutherland High School in 1961. Bob's early interest in photography was evident as he took photos for school and community events. While working at the Buntrock-Salie Photographic Studio in Storm Lake, Iowa, Bob graduated from Buena Vista College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Liberal Arts with a major in elementary education. Bob's first teaching position was sixth grade at North Elementary in Storm Lake, where he soon met his future wife, Suzanne Zobrist. They were married on June 16, 1968, and a year later headed for Purdue University. Bob's interest in photography continued as he worked for the Purdue Photographic Service, while obtaining both a Master's and Education Specialist Degree in Elementary Guidance. After returning to Ames, Iowa, Bob was a guidance counselor at Beardshear and Roosevelt Elementary Schools, and then a guidance counselor and sixth grade teacher at Fellows Elementary. Here Bob's hobby led him to photograph numerous Cyclone sports events for Iowa State University, where he also earned a PhD in Curriculum and Instructional Technology in 1994. Bob's photographic adventures included rappelling down George Washington's head at Mt. Rushmore, capturing images of several presidents in Iowa and polar bears in the Canadian Arctic, and sharing a National Geographic Expedition to Antarctica with Neil Armstrong, where they had time to visit about another of Bob's interests, the space program. However, Bob's favorite photos were of his son Ryan, his grandchildren, and the beautiful animals, seasonal landscapes, and sunsets of the Iowa countryside. Bob was proceeded in passing by his sister Margaret Gould; his parents Oren and Helen Kelly; and his granddaughter Amelia Kelly. He is survived by his wife Suzanne; son, Ryan (Caroline) Kelly; grandchildren: Charlie, Quinn, and Clara Kelly of Jonesboro, Arkansas; brother, Richard Kelly (Joann) of Larrabee, Iowa; sister, Patricia Kelly of Arizona; brother-in-law, Dale Zobrist of Washington; and multiple nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at the Adams Funeral Home, 502 Douglas Ave., Ames, Iowa. A private family graveside service will be held at the Cedar Cemetery near Cherokee, Iowa. Burial will be in the Cedar Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Adams Funeral Home and online condolences may be left for Bob's family at www.adamssoderstrum.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mary Greeley Foundation-Rehab and Wellness Fund, 1111 Duff Ave., Ames, Iowa 50010.
