Chambers was born August 26, 1845, at Rock Grove, Stephenson county, Ill. and died January 10, 1918 at Bennet, Neb. aged 72 years, 4 months and 15 days. For a number of years Mr. Chambers lived in the community where he was born and it was there on May 31, 1868, that he married Miss Isabel McCalla. They became the parents of three sons and one daughter, Ernest A., Frank S., Joseph L., and Kathryn E. In 1876 the family moved to Chicago, Mr. Chambers being engaged as commission merchant in that city. Two years later they located in Lancaster county, Neb., where Mr. Chambers became a successful farmer and stock raiser. In 1898 he retired from agriculture pursuits, and with his wife and daughter moved to the village of Bennet where he resided till his death. During his career of nearly forty years in Lancaster county he was a very useful and highly respected citizen. He was active in politics, being at one time a candidate for state senator. He had the honor of being a personal friend of W. J. Bryan, whom he greatly admired. About the year 1890 he helped organize Farmer's Mutual Insurance company, and became its treasurer, which office he held the remainder of his life. He was also an officer in the Lancaster Horticultural Society. He was connected in prominent manner with the state fair, the Lancaster County Farmers' club and the Citizens Bank of Bennet. Mr. Chambers united with the Presbyterian church at Bennet, Jan. 15, 1882, of which he remained a faithful member until he joined the Church Triumphant. Each Sabbath found him in the house of God unless prevented by illness. He served his church in the capacity of Sunday school superintendent, elder and clerk for a number of years. The church was loved by him and received his hearty support in every way. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father, always solicitous for the comfort and welfare of every member of his family. His love of country and love of family mingled when he and his wife planned the Christmas celebrations which proved to be his last one on earth. Each of his grandchildren and his only daughter were recipients of liberty bonds from his generous hand. He leaves to mourn his loss a faithful, loving wife who for about fifty years has been his constant companion, four children, three daughters-in-law and nine grandchildren, also two sisters, and two brothers, Mrs. Eli Brenizer of Bennet, Neb., and Mrs. F.T. Belt of Whittier, Calif.; John J. of Bennet, Neb. and Frank of Whittier, Calif., all of whom were able to be with him at the last except the sister and brother in California. He also leaves a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends who will greatly feel their loss. "A tall and sturdy oak in the forest of men." is the tribute paid him in a letter of sympathy written by a prominent man who was his friend and counsellor for more than twenty five years.
