ROBERT “Bob” THOMAS LYNCH passed away at Sanford Care Center, Vermillion, SD, on March 13, 2018, his 86th birthday. A lifelong resident of Burbank, SD, Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Imelda O’Brien Lynch, and daughter, Glenda Lynch. When most people retire, they stop going to the office. For Bob Lynch, it was just the opposite. A lifelong Burbank farmer, and one-time Clay County Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year, Bob called outings to play blackjack “going to the office”. It was a passion and talent he took quite seriously for several years as he enjoyed visiting area river boats and casinos, as well as making an annual winter escape to Las Vegas to coincide with his wedding anniversary. Bob truly loved South Dakota and never felt the need to travel far afield. He rose early to work on the farm and always came back into the farmhouse to have a second breakfast and cup of tea at a more reasonable hour. He was a fan of huge chocolate malts created in a large Pyrex measuring cup. He made a mean rice pudding with raisins and loved to have steak on the grill with buttery sweet corn fresh from the field. Summer weekends often meant a trip to Gavin’s Point Dam with the George Ballard family. Bob would cup his hands together like a stirrup and hurl his children into to the air, so they could gleefully dive into the lake. After that workout, the whole crew ventured over to the Nebraska side of the dam to enjoy a steak supper for the adults; hot dogs for the children. Pets were always important to Bob. In his last years on the farm, he could often be seen walking down the road with black dog Charcoal and white cat Snowball by his side. It indeed takes an animal lover to coax a cat into going for a walk. Whenever he was singing, you’d know he was having a good day. One of his favorites was “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”.
