Ward, a prominent resident of Crisfield and one of the most widely known salesmen on the lower Delmarva Peninsula, died at the McCready Memorial Hospital in this city Wednesday night. Mr. Ward, who was 58 years of age, had been associated with the O. L. Tawes Co., Wholesale Grocers, for the past 38 years and during that time had acquired a wide acquaintanceship among the merchants and public generally in the large territory which he served. He was a gentleman of pleasing manner, big hearted and friendly and enjoyed the confidence and respect of all who knew him. The deceased was a son of the late Thomas and Susan Ward, among the early settlers on the Eastern Shore Peninsula, and was born at "Heartsease," the old Ward homestead in the Hopewell neighborhood. He had been in failing health for several months, but the immediate cause of his death is reported to have been peritonitis resulting from chronic appendicitis. Surviving Mr. Ward, are his wife Mrs. Maude Johnson Ward; two sons, R. Van Ward, Jr., and Wallace Lee Ward; one sister, Mrs. O. L. Tawes of Crisfield; and one brother, George O. Ward of Annapolis. Funeral services will be held this (Saturday) afternoon at 2 o'clock from St. Peters M. E. Church conducted by Rev. Ernest M. Byrd, assisted by Dr. John J. Bunting.
