ANNIE TAWES BURIED WEDNESDAY Aged Lady Died Last Monday One of the community's most highly esteemed matrons, Mrs. Annie Laura Tawes, widow of the late Orrie L. Tawes, who was a leading wholesale grocer and financier, died at her home on Main street early Monday morning, at the age of 84 years. Her death followed a prolonged illness. A native of Somerset county, she was the daughter of the late Thomas H. and Susan Ward, and she was born near Crisfield. Mrs. Tawes was a lovely person, first of all a homemaker, having devoted most of her time to her husband and family, but finding time to do those neighborly acts of kindness and courtesy which endeared her to everyone who knew her. She had a big heart, and was sympathetic and understanding and a pillar of strength in time of trouble and distress. Her many friends held her in the highest regard and affection. As a young woman she was an active member of old St. Peters Church near her girlhood home. When she came to Crisfield more than fifty years ago, she became a member of Immanuel Methodist Church and was active in its affairs for years, and attended and enjoyed the services there until illness confined her to her home. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in her home, with Rev. A.B. Frye, pastor of Immanuel Church officiating. Interment was in Asbury Cemetery. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. T. Edward Webb of Salisbury, Mrs. William S. Sterling, and Mrs. Anne T. Whittington, both of Crisfield, one son, Orrie L. Tawes, Jr., of this city, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
