Lawson, only son of John and Mary Lawson, was born August 4th, 1875, near Fairfield, Iowa. His early life was lived in the vicinity of Fairfield, where he attended school and learned and worked at his trade of candy maker and baker. On December 25, 1898, he was united in marriage to Miss Lettie Simmons of Birmingham and they took up their residence in Keosauqua where he had been engaged in various business enterprises, among them being a meat market and restaurant businesses and at the time of his death was in the insurance business. His work has taken him all over the state of Iowa, and as the width of his business territory has grown, so has his circle of acquaintances grown. He was well liked and admired by his employers and customers alike, for his good business judgment, industry and friendly and likeable qualities. He had always enjoyed the best of health, until within the last year, when he failed to maintain his usual good health. During the last month his illness grew steadily worse. All that skilled physicians and surgeons and loving hands could do was done for his comfort and recovery, but he passed from this life to immortal life at St. Joseph hospital at Ottumwa Sunday, March 25, 1928, age 52 years, 8 months and 21 days. In the passing of Mr. Lawson, Keosauqua loses an industrious, generous hearted citizen, his home a devoted husband and his friends and fraternal brethren a true friend and brother. And all his associates and relatives a jolly, good hearted, helpful soul whose memory they shall tenderly cherish. He was a member of Fairfield Order of Elks, the Keosauqua Masonic lodge, Keosauqua Camp of Modern Woodmen and the Ancient Order of United Woodmen. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife, six nieces and eight nephews, four aunts, Mrs. A.W. Brown of Fairfield, Mrs. C.W. Jordan of Ottumwa, Mrs. W.W. Dyer of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. John Ratcliffe of Muscatine; two uncles, J.C. Gossick of Fairfield and Joe Lawson of Mississippi, besides many other relatives and a host of friends who knew and loved him. Funeral services were held at the First Congregational church at Keosauqua, Wednesday, March 28, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Paul Jackson. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery at Fairfield.
