He was the son of Matías Cordero and Ygnacia Zúñiga. He was seven days old when he was baptized at the Presidio Chapel (San Carlos) February 14, 1836 (SC Baptism 03987). Romualdo Cordero enlisted as a private for 3 years at Santa Bárbara July 26, 1864, and was mustered into Company C, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry. At enlistment he was described as 5 feet 8½ inches tall with a light complexion, grey eyes, and black hair. Additionally, the description indicated his birthplace was Santa Bárbara [sic] and his occupation was ranchero. He served at Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, from September 1865 until January 1866. Cordero was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco April 2, 1866 (Evans, 594; Orton, 316). Romualdo Cordero was enumerated in the 1870 U. S. Census at Castroville Township, Monterey County. He married (1) Emerica Espinosa y Pico March 10, 1873 (Marriage Records, Santa Bárbara County, MLB10). Emerica was baptized at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel May 22, 1834 (BP Baptism 01057). She was a sister of Joaquín Espinosa y Pico, who also was a soldier of Company C. Romualdo Cordero registered to vote September 18, 1888. At registration he indicated his residence was San Buenaventura (Great Register, Ventura County, 1890:10). Romualdo filed for a Civil War veteran's pension June 22, 1892, and received application No. 1,117,964 and certificate No. 888,418. He refiled June 12, 1907. A pension claim from a widow was not found (Pension Application File, R. Cordero). Romualdo Cordero married (2) María Justa Castillo de Márquez July 13, 1909 (Marriage Records, Santa Bárbara County), and they had one son, Serafín. Romualdo Cordero's death certificate (CADI 40,847) indicated length of residence at his place of death, 701 Vine Avenue, Santa Bárbara, was ten years and that he was a life long resident of California. His occupation was listed as retired and his age was 88 years, 7 months, and and 28 days. He died at 11:55 p.m., October 4, 1920, from chronic myocarditis with decomposition, a condition that he had endured for three years. --- Romualdo Cordero, Local Pioneer, Dies. Romualdo Cordero, pioneer resident of Santa Bárbara, died at his home, 701 Vine Street, yesterday. Cordero was 89 years of age and a veteran of the Civil War. He is survived by a widow, two sons, and a daughter. The children are Romualdo Jr., Serafin Cordero, and Mrs. Marie Narraez. Funeral services will be held Monday morning from the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows. Morning Press (Santa Barbara), October 3, 1920, 2:3 --- His second wife, María Justa Castillo de Márquez, was born at Boquilla de San Ysidro, Coahuila, México, August 8, 1871. She married Pablo (Paolo) Márquez from Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, about 1890 and they had three children. The third child, Rachel was born at Stockdale, Wilson County, Texas, November 10, 1901. She married Romualdo Cordero at Santa Bárbara July 13, 1909 (Marriage Records, Santa Bárbara County), and they had one son, Serafín. The death certificate for María Justa Castillo de Cordero, age 69 years, indicated that she died April 9, 1941, at 809 East Mason Street, Santa Bárbara. Her length of residence was 37 years in the community and 50 years in the United States. The cause of death was a heart attack.The 1963 Sanborn Fire Insurance map listing Santa Bárbara's remaining pioneer adobes includes her home at 809 East Mason Street.
