The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, April 4, 1935; pg. 1 ================== Rosa Lurilla Mumma, daughter of Winfield S. and Myra Mumma, was born at Dorchester, Saline County, Nebraska, October 12, 1884, and departed this life Wednesday morning, April 3, 1935, at her home two miles north of Nora, at the age of 50 years, 5 months and 21 days. The early years of her life were spent at Dorchester. From there she moved with her parents to a farm home near Nelson, Nebraska, about the year 1902. On the 23rd day of February, 1905, she was united in marriage to Millard W. Ray, and to this union five children were born, all of whom survive their mother. They are Ruby Eilers, Howard, Alda, Myramae, and Byron. They were all present at the time of their mother's departure. Besides her husband and children, Mrs. Ray leaves to mourn her untimely death: her mother, Mrs. Myra Mumma of Nelson, one sister, Mrs. Nellie Thomas of Sheridan, Wyoming; two brothers, Jess of Sharon Springs, Kansas and William N. of Nelson. Her father preceded her to the better land in 1921, and her sister Florence in 1929. When a young lady, Mrs. Ray united with the United Brethren church (sic) east of Nelson, and after her marriage she transferred to the Methodist church (sic) at Nelson. A year ago last January, Mr. and Mrs. Ray and their daughter, Myramae were transferred to the Methodist church (sic) at Nora. No one who knew her fine Christian character, needs to be told how devoted she was to her Saviour, her family, her neighbors, and all who needed a helping hand. She was not only found in the House of the Lord on the Sabbath day, but at all times her splendid Christian spirit was shown in all her daily deeds. She was a great lover of flowers, especially of roses, and whenever the season was at all propitious, her garden was a profusion of beautiful bloom. Our neighborhood is greatly grieved at her passing, and also most genuinely shocked to know that one who seemed to enjoy unusually good health should be so suddenly called away. On Saturday, March 31, she was taken suddenly with a chill, followed by pleurisy, and then pneumonia. While her sickness was of short duration, her suffering was intense, and in spite of skillful medical care, the careful, constant help of a good nurse. the (sic) loving ministrations of those who loved her most and the prayers of a community for her recovery, the dread disease did its work. And all bow in reverence to the will of Him who doeth all things well, knowing that "He giveth His beloved sleep." Funeral services were held from the Methodist church (sic) in Nelson, on Friday afternoon, April 5th, at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. G.M. Bing, her pastor, and he was assisted by her former pastor, the Rev. W.B. Zimmerman of Springfield, and the Rev. V.R. Daniels, pastor of the church in which the service was held. A mixed quartet composed of Doane F. Kiechel and Mrs. W.L. Portwood of Nelson, and Jesse Hamel and Mrs. Herbert Bucknell of Nora, sang appropriate hymns, with Mrs. V.R. Daniels at the piano. The pallbearers were: Clayton Shipman, Will Youngs, Henry Stoers, Roy Adams, Frank Belcher and J.J. Adcock of the Sunday school class of Norak of which Mrs. Ray was an honored member. Internment was in the cemetery at Nelson.
