Parks, highly respected matron of Myrtle street, died suddenly at her home there early Saturday morning of a paralytic stroke. She would have been 90 years of age in July. Born in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Henry Clay and Leah A. Todd McCoy, and the widow of the late William Wiley Parks. Mrs. Parks and her husband moved here 33 years ago, from Holland's Island, at a time when a number of the residents of that Island were leaving it and settling in Crisfield. She was a lady of strong character, remarkably independent, energetic and active up to the day of her death. She loved her home she loved her relatives, she loved people. Since the death of her husband some years ago she had lived alone in their home at the corner of Myrtle and Potomac streets, kept her house and grounds, was fond of growing things, and seldom accepted help in performing chores about the place. Her family had always been her first consideration, and seldom a day passed but that some of her children, or other relatives, were in to see her to make sure she was all right, and while Miss Rosa, as she was best known, was delighted to have them, she always preferred to do her housework and gardening herself and to attend to other affairs in an independent spirit that seemed as strong when she was 89 as it was in her younger years. She frequently visited neighbors and friends to discuss the happenings of the day or week, to help out whenever her services were needed, always bringing with her an air of vigor and vitality remarkable in one of her age, and she was never happier than when calling, or having callers in her own home. She read a great deal and kept well informed on current topics, and on a table in her living room were several new books which she had been reading and enjoying. Like most of the people who came here from Holland's Island, she was religious. She had been a Sunday School teacher, and for years was a member of Immanuel Methodist Church, of the Womens Society of Christian Service, and of the Philathea Class, quite a number of members of which attended her funeral. She believed in the Lord, and also that the Lord helped those who helped themselves, and practiced that doctrine. In her long life she had been a happy and devoted wife and mother, a staunch Christian, a good neighbor, and a fine friend. Very few people had a fuller life than Mrs. Parks had, or were more ready for the final call that came last Saturday, painlessly taking her away to where many loved ones awaited her coming. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday in the Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home here, conducted by the Rev. J. Howard Link, pastor of Immanuel Methodist Church. Burial was in Sunnyridge Memorial Park. Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Nellie C. Todd and Mrs. Bessie (Clarence) Todd, one son, Capt. Etheridge (Mike) Parks, all of Crisfield, and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The Crisfield Times, January 24, 1958 pg.10
