Description	:	Bertha Breed, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byron W. Breed, was born September 1, 1875, at Patch Grove, Wisconsin. Three years later, the Breed family came to Brookings county, in Dakota territory, as one of the early pioneering families. From that date, 1879, Bertha Breed spent the remainder of her life in South Dakota. In 1896, at Flandreau, she was married to William S. Ross, also a pioneer of this territory. From that date, 1879, Bertha Breed spent the remainder of her life in South Dakota. In 1896, at Flandreau, she was married to William S. Ross, also a pioneer of this territory. After their marriage, the young couple lived in Brookings and Roberts counties, finally establishing their home on a farm in Hamlin county near Estelline. There they remained for 25 years. Bertha Breed, who as a child, had witnessed the blizzard of 1888 from a sod house, continued to face these hazards of pioneer life as a young wife and mother. She raised five children, carried the heavy burdens and duties of a farm wife, and contributed time and energy to the church and neighborhood affairs.
