Hiner, aged 67 years. Staunton Spectator May 22, 1889 A Stalwart Family - Our attention was called last Sunday to the fact that Mr. Joseph B. Hiner, who lives about a mile east of this place and was visiting one of his sons in Monterey, had his five sons near him, the youngest of which is thirty five years of age - all hearty, stout men, with one exception. Mr. Hiner himself is seventy-two years of age, yet is more active and hardy than many men of forty. He informed us that be had broken the ground and planted several acres in corn, doing most, if not all, of the work himself. The Hiner family is probably the largest and most extensively connected in this county of any other one family in any county in the State. They can all trace their genealogy back a few generations to John Hiner and wife, who settled near Doe Hill years ago. There was born to this couple twelve children, six boys and six girls, and they all grew to manhood and womanhood. Five of the boys remained in the neighborhood in which they were born and all raised large families and lived to a good old age. From these ancestors sprung the many of the name of Hiner that can be found in Highland county. From the earliest recollection of them they have been known as a hardy, honest and industrious people, many of them serving the county and State in offices of honor and trust, from an early date up to the present time, and in no instance have they betrayed the confidence imposed in them. - Highland Recorder
