Description	:	Our beloved Ruth Lynette Baker slipped away peacefully on June 6, 2012 with family around. She was born in Canning, SD on Aug. 18, 1923 to George and Omie (Low) Hewlett. She stayed home from school to nurse her terminally ill grandmother; then went on to graduate from Canning High in 1942. Her sister talked her into moving to Portland, OR where she worked in a canning factory. She met and later married Bobby Jo Giles, to which two sons were born. Read More	Our beloved Ruth Lynette Baker slipped away peacefully on June 6, 2012 with family around. She was born in Canning, SD on Aug. 18, 1923 to George and Omie (Low) Hewlett. She stayed home from school to nurse her terminally ill grandmother; then went on to graduate from Canning High in 1942. Her sister talked her into moving to Portland, OR where she worked in a canning factory. She met and later married Bobby Jo Giles, to which two sons were born. When the boys were still very small, she hopped a train with them and headed back home from Texas. She overcame adversity with a great inner strength, which would later give unspoken strength to others. In 1948 she married her soul mate, Winfield Baker in Pierre. To this union two more sons were born. Once again her strength took center stage when she was encouraged to institutionalize her baby who had acquired polio. Instead, they raised him to be self-sufficient. They homesteaded in Onida, selling it and eventually moving to Pierre in 1965. With hard work and diligence, she purchased their only home, in which she proudly lived until Feb. She operated her own daycare and was a nanny at the governor's mansion under the Kneip administration. While in her 50's she attended adult education courses, becoming a secretary under the Green Thumb program. She and Winnie thoroughly enjoyed traveling, especially to special events of their kids and grand kids, always putting them first. We will always cherish her hand embroidered pillowcases she gave as gifts; and all would receive a special 2 year calendar at Christmas. And what wonderful pie and carrot cake! A week after losing Winnie in 2007, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she overcame. She enjoyed going out for Wednesday ice cream with friends. We will greatly miss her! Waiting for her in Heaven is her beloved Winnie, son Steven, two brothers and two sisters. Grateful for having shared her life are sons Robert (Linda) Giles, Pierre; Keith (JoAnn) Giles, Casper, WY; Harold (Sheila) Baker, Spearfish; brother, Henry Hewlett, Pierre; 9 grandkids; 14 great-grandkids; and 7 great-great grandkids.
