Ewing, known for decades for her lavish and inventive parties, luncheons and teas at her pink stucco home in North Lawrence, died Wednesday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was 98. Mrs. Ewing moved to Lawrence with her husband, A.B. Ewing, in 1917. He was an accountant and later a consultant and executive with various businesses, and they settled into a large home at 703 N. Third, where Mrs. Ewing developed a reputation as one of the community's foremost entertainers. There were, for instance, her hobo parties for 5-year-old boys. The boys were given bandanas and knapsacks and taken around the neighborhood to "beg." Her Alice in Wonderland parties were for 8-year-old girls, who walked into Wonderland when they entered the Ewing home. They drank tea with the white rabbit, threw pennies into a wishing well and slid down a rabbit hole. There also were birthday parties, graduation parties, bridge parties, luncheons, showers and teas, often dominated by the color pink, which became a Ewing party trademark. About 450 people attended the Ewing's 50th wedding anniversary in 1966 at Plymouth Congregational Church. "My gosh, she was just wonderful at giving parties," said Petey Cerf, a longtime Lawrence resident whose daughter attended a Ewing party in the 1950s. "She was obviously very, very good at it." Mrs. Ewing's husband died in 1971, and her entertaining slowed in 1974 when she moved from the North Lawrence home to an apartment. "It's difficult to give big parties in an apartment," she told the Journal-World in 1975. "And if I give a big party somewhere else -- in a commercial establishment -- I can't put up elaborate decorations." Later she moved to the Presbyterian Manor nursing home. Services for Mrs. Ewing are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. She was born Nov. 8, 1897, in Fort Scott, the daughter of James R. and Nancy J. Glazebrook Winsby. She married A.B. Ewing on Sept. 25, 1916, in Fort Scott. She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, Adah Chapter No. 4 Order of Eastern Star, West Side Study Club, Altrusa, Kansas Authors Club, Lawrence Music Club, Sigma Alpha Lota, Delta Tau Mother's Club, Worthy Matron OES Adah Chapter and Grand Ruth in Grand Chapter of Kansas OES. She also was secretary/treasurer on the Lawrence Public Library board from 1957 to 1965, a recipient of the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award in 1985 and a reader and board member for Kansas University's Audio-Reader Network. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara E. Crews, Lawrence, and Blossom E. Randall, Wichita; a son, Roger L. Ewing, Warrensburg, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mildred E. Frakes, died in 1993. A son, Allan R.
