He was born Nov. 20, 1915, at White House Plantation in Georgetown County, a son of the late Samuel Broyles Crayton and Pearl Livingston Crayton. Read More	Samuel Crayton GEORGETOWN - Samuel Broyles ``Capt. Sammy'' Crayton Jr., 83, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 20, 1915, at White House Plantation in Georgetown County, a son of the late Samuel Broyles Crayton and Pearl Livingston Crayton. He grew up in Georgetown and lived most of his life there. As a young man, Capt. Crayton served as a crewmember of the clipper ship ``Sea Cloud.'' He was a Navy veteran of World War II and attained the rank of chief warrant officer. Capt. Crayton was a pioneer sports fisherman in South Carolina, and he was instrumental in the development of sportfishing in South Carolina. He operated his own sportfishing charter business for a number of years and had also been the captain of several private yachts. In his retirement years, Capt. Crayton was noted for his smoked fish. Capt. Crayton was a member of Georgetown Presbyterian Church. He also was a founding member of Georgetown Sportfishing Association and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6444 and Battery White Camp No. 1568, Sons of Confederate Veterans. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Pennay Crayton of Georgetown ; a son, Samuel B. Crayton III of Georgetown ; two daughters, Margaret C. Mayer and Patricia A. Crayton, both of Georgetown ; his twin brother, Richard P. Crayton of North Litchfield Beach; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Visitation will be from 5-7 tonight at Georgetown chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Georgetown Presbyterian Church. The Rev. J. Ben Sloan will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery Annex. Memorials may be made to Artificial Reef Building Program, Georgetown Sportfishing Association, P.O. Box 2168, Georgetown 29442.
