Shaeffer was born in Stratford, Iowa, May 12, 1885, and died Tuesday evening, September 21, 1909, at the age of 24 years, 4 months and 5 days, the cause of his death being due to consumption. A little over three years ago the presence of the disease became evident and steps were immediately taken to overcome the disease and he spent the most of the year of 1906 in Wyoming and Denver, Colorado. He returned feeling better and remained at home for some time, but as the fall season of 1907 approached the symptoms of the disease seemed to return and he again went to Denver. For awhile he seemed to grow better and hopes for his recovery arose in the minds of his many friends here. After a year’s stay in Denver he came home and made a few weeks visit here last fall with friends. In May of this year he came home again and then the hopes which had risen so highly in the minds of the friends were immediately crushed forever, for it was at once noticeable that the disease had gained such a hold that recovery was impossible. During the last few months of his illness he was never known to complain and struggled bravely on until the Master called him home. It has seldom been our duty to chronicle a death that has caused us so much pain and sorrow. It was the writers pleasure to grow up as a companion and playmate to the deceased and many were the hours spent together in games and other past-times, and his taking away in the prime of life is keenly felt. His heart was as pure as gold and his friends were numbered by the score. To know him was to love him and his friends and friendships were sacred to him. Funeral services were held at the residence and at the M.E. church Sunday afternoon, Rev. W.G. Hoelscher of Boone paying a beautiful tribute to the memory of the deceased. The music rendered was such as to soften all hearts and moisten eyes. The floral offerings surpassed in beauty anything ever seen here before and were the gifts of relatives and friends showing their respects to the departed one. At the close of the solemn services the sad cortege moved to the South Marion cemetery where the remains were interred. Mother, sister and one brother have preceded him to the better land and father four brothers, relatives and a host of friends are left to mourn his untimely departure. Thus closed the life of this noble young man.
