Description	:	Masonic funeral services will be held from the Grant Church Friday afternoon for Samuel Elmer Smith, 77, who died Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kate Givan, east of Grant. The body will remain here at Wolfe’s mortuary until funeral time. Mr. Smith is survived by four children, R. R. Smith, Mrs. Kate E. Givan, and Nellie Lenz, all of Grant, and Fred C. Smith of Glenn Fairy, Idaho, 13, grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A son of Samuel Masterson Smith and Maria M. Mills, he was born during the Civil War, November 26, 1862, in a little old house built of native lumber, the first house to be built in the town of Milford, now Grant. His parent’s emigrated from Michigan in 1856 to Douglas Township where the elder Smith established a flour mill which is still operating on the Nodaway river. Mr. Smith was one of nine children. On September 10, 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Rupp, who died in 1922. He had a number of occupation during this eventful life. For many years he lived on a farm a half mile from Grant, along the Nodaway river, later moving to town where he took over the management of the mill. In 1917 he became the editor of the Grant Chief and it was during this period he began writing his well known squibs, editorials , and other articles. He was for a short time vice president of the A.N. & S. Railroad that operated between Atlantic and Villisca. He was a lifelong Democrat and he helped organize the Douglas Township Farm Bureau. During five successive ears he was one of the committee of five which sponsored in a successful manner lecture courses of the finest talent obtainable. For five years he was treasurer of the Grant Independent School District and secretary of the same institution 20 years. Until April of this year he had been Grant Town Clerk 20 years. He refused, however to accept another appointment in the spring. Mr. Smith is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Veva M. Follmer of Oak, Nebraska. Pall bearers for the funeral will be Lester Smith, Earl Coureier, D. J. Chalmers, A. C. Stinemates, Emory Eshelman, and J. F. Mueller. The Rev. A.
