His death was due to apoplexy. He had been in his customary good health up to the time of his death. Deceased was born near the city of Trondhjem Norway Jan. 5, 1832, where his childhood days were spent and where he later grew to manhood. June 16, 1861 he, with 400 emigrants, left Trondhjem in a sailing vessel, arriving in Ottawa Canada after a 9 weeks' voyage. He worked for a farmer near said city for seven months at $8.00 a month. Later he left for Menondale, Wis., where he worked in the wineries and saw mills for three years, when he left for Chicago. He purchased a horse and express wagon, which he operated with good success for two years. He left Chicago in the fall of 1867, for Union county, D.T. and was united in marriage while enroute to Miss Aaste Anderson in Sioux City, October 4, 1867. Later he filed on a homestead in Union county, D.T., where he resided continuously until his death. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dahl, one dying in early childhood. Besides his devoted wife, these five children remain to mourn his loss: Mrs. Ole Ofstehage, Fred, Henry, Louise and Adolph Dahl, all of Brule township. Funeral services were held at the St. Paul Lutheran church, of which deceased was a devoted member. The casket and floral decorations were exceedingly beautiful and almost every member of the congregation was present to pay their last respects to the deceased, who had lived and mingled with them for the last 42 years. Rev. Lavik of Vermillion officiated, owing to the absence of Rev. Reinertsen. The interment was in the St. Paul church cemetery. In the sudden demise of Mr. Dahl the community where he has resided so long has lost a kind neighbor and highly respected citizen and the family, a devoted husband and a kind, loving parent.
