Description	:	STONEVILLE – Samuel Franklin “Sammie” Vernon, 82, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Hospice Home of Rockingham County. “Sammie” passed away surrounded by family after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was confined to a bed for the last seven years and was cared for at home by his loving and devoted wife constantly. She was an around-the-clock caregiver and made sure his every need was met. Mr. Vernon was born June 17, 1932, in Stokes County, to the late Robert Patrick Vernon and Ruth Ellen Gann Vernon. “Sammie” graduated from Madison High School in 1949 and worked for his father in a saw mill. He then went to work for Snipes-Crowell where he worked for 46 years before retiring. As a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church for 47 years, he served on the church board, was an usher and was Sunday School class president for many years until his health declined. He loved his church family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Jimmy Franklin Vernon; brothers, Ralph Vernon and three infants; and sisters, Faye Griffin and Barbara Wright. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lorene Mamie Gantt Vernon of the home; son, Samuel Dwayne Vernon (Tammy); daughters, Pamela Vernon and Karen Vernon Simpson (Daniel); sister, Margaret Moore; grandchildren, Melanie Barham (Scott), Bobbe Jo Vernon, Chris Gordon, Zachary Simpson and Kaitlyn Simpson; and great-grandchildren, Holden Barham, Mason Barham, Carrie, Ashley and Ethan and three great-great-grandchildren.
