He was a private in May 1864. He was born 16 Oct 1911 in Woodstock. Robert J Driver Jr.'s book the Confederat Soldiers of Rockbridge County, VIrginia: A Roster, NC, 2016, p 102. On the 1870 Lexington, VA census, I found printer Saml Gillock, 48 (born about 1822) Mary P Gillock, 38; James W Gillock, 16; John J Gillock, 13; Joachim Gillock, 10; Mary A Gillock, 8 Louella Gillock, 6; and 2 apprentice printers, all VA born. On the 1880 Lexington, VA census, I found Samuel and Susan living with their son in law and daughter. Farmer Henry Holland, 31; Mary A. Holland, 26; Susan H. Holland, 9; Howard B. Holland, 4; Florence Holland, 2; printer Samuel Gillock, 65 and Susan Gillock, 55, all VA born. In 1900, Samuel and Susan have passed and the Hollands now live in Chesterfield Co., VA (where Henry is from) with kids Florence, 20 and Harry C., 13. He worked as a newspaper apprentice at a very young age in his native county. After his move to Lexington in 1838, he worked at the local Lexington Gazette and afterward, the Valley Star, a Democratic paper. He worked his way up there to editor and then the owner.
