"OBITUARY - Samuel H. Meyers was born in Sommerset county, Pa., February 2, 1825, and died at his home near Maxwell, Ia., May 15, 1902, age seventy-seven years, three months and thirteen days. He was united in marriage to Barbara Klingam September 17, 1849; to this union was born eleven children, thirty grand children and one great grand child, all of whom survive him. He resided in Pennsylvania till 1854 when he moved to Indiana, thence to Johnson county, Ia., in 1856 and from there to Polk county in 1857, where he has lived for forty-five years, till the Master called him to a higher and nobler life. Mr. Meyers united with the Brethren church in 1859 and remained a good and faithful member and loyal to all the rules of the church of his choice and now he rests with the church triumphant. The funeral was held at the Brethren church south of town, Sunday at 11 a. m. and was in charge of Rev. M. Deardorff, of Yale, Ia., who was an old friend and neighbor of the deceased. Mr. Meyers was one of the most highly respected citizens of this vicinity and, being one of the earliest settlers, he did much to help build up the community in which he live, consequently a large concourse of people was at his funeral to pay their last respects to their departed friend and neighbor. One very touching event was to see the six sons acting as pall bearers. Mr. Meyers will long be remembered by a host of friends and the bereaved family have the sympathy of all. CARD OF THANKS - Mrs. Barbara Meyers and children wish to return their heartfelt thanks to all their neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted them in their sad bereavement of husband and father. "Samuel Meyers, the subject of this notice, was born the 2d of February, 1825, in Sumerset county, Pennsylavania, died May 15, 1902, aged seventy-seven years, three months and thirteen days. He was married to Barbara Klingaman the 17th of September, 1849, in Sumerset county, Pennsylvania, to this union eleven children were born, all living and all present at his funeral. He resided in Pennsylvania until 1854 when they moved to Indiana in 1855; then to Johnson county, Iowa, in 1856; in 1857 he moved to Polk county, Iowa, where he lived till called by the grim monster Death. In 1859 he united with the Brethren church and in its pales he lived an honest member until he joined the church above - to ever be with the Lord. He lived to raise all of his children and to see them all married but two, Danny and Mattie - they will miss him most as he has been afflicted a long time and a constant care on their minds, but a patient sufferer. They will hear his gentle voice no more calling their names - he loved his children more than is common and when he could speak no more their names when they came to see him he would look in their faces and smile to let them know he recognized their faces. He lived to see his sons all honorable business men, farmers and stockmen, they never have brought reproach upon their father's good name - his daughters are such as he was greatly proud of and that that are married got men of honor and integrity, business men and farmers. There is one heart we cannot console, that is his lonely and aged wife, words of condolence are cold, on paper, to her - the friend of her youth lies silent and low in yonder cold cemetery alone, she never thinking she was mortal but gave all her strength to serve at his every call, when his aged body grew feeble he put all his dependence upon her and nothing she could do was left undone. And why does the myrtle and holly veil themselves in mourning and the eagle fold his sable plumes in grief? Because father is gone never to return - one vacant chair in the home, the first that ever was vacated by death in their home, a loving husband is gone. O! so many years have two hearts beat as one and now one lonely heart in sorrow throbs for her departed dead, but it will not be long till a reunion when we shall see our loved ones and know as we are known. Rev. M. Deardorff, of Yale, conducted the funeral. The remains were laid to rest in the Brethren cemetery. The worn out body was borne to the grave by his sorrowing sons and tender hands lowered all that was mortal of husband, father and friend into the bosom of Mother Earth to await the last loud trumpet that awakes the sleeping dead.
