MELTON DIED SUNDAY Mrs. F. E. Holden, After Being Ill Two Years, Dies Tuesday. Samuel Newton Marquis, youngest son of John and Sarah Marquis, was born in Highland county, Ohio, April 10, 1833, and departed this life. Dec. 3, 1810, at his hoine in Clarke county, Iowa, at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 23 days. He was one of a famly of eight children—four boys and four girls — as follows: William, Jackson and John, Mrs. Rachel Trout, Mrs. Leah Rook, Mrs. Liza Short and Mrs. Mary Welch, all who have preceded him to the better world but one sister, Mrs. Leah Rook, of Comestock, Neb. Samuel, the subject of this sketch, was united in marriage to Miss Rachel J. Lozier in Ohio, on Sept. 14, 1858, who died in Clarke county, Iowa, March 3, 1863, leaving three children, Mrs. Susan Kennedy now (three lines unreadable) Neb., and one son, John W., dieing (sic) in infancy. He was again united in marriage to Mrs. Jemima Pultz on November 7, 1865, who survives him. Of this union, five children were born: Mrs. Josephine Cline, now living in Fort Morgan, Colorado; Calvin C. and James A., of Clarke county, Iowa; Simon, who died at the age of eighteen years. there are also seventeen grand children and nine great grandchildren living, two step children, Edward Pultz and Mrs. Anna Calvin, both of Manhattan, Kansas, also surviving him, and thirteen grandchildren and ten step great grandchildren are living. Bro. Marquis was converted in his own house in the fall of 1861 and placed his membership with the Methodist church for five years and then united with the Church of Christ in Christian Union at Bethel Chapel of which he and his wife were charter members and have ever remained loyal to the same. He moved from Ohio to Clarke county, Iowa in 1856, and during all the trying experiences common to pioneer life, he retained an irreproachable integrity as a citizen and as a Christian. On Tuesday. December 5, 1916, funeral services were conducted at the home and at the church by Rev. C. W. Stewart, pastor, assisted by Rev. N. D. Gordon and Rev. A. C Thomas. A quartette from the Christian Union church of Milo,rendered the chosen hymns. Miss Lilah Marquis, granddaughter of the deceased, presided at the piano. The pall bearers were his two sons, Calvin and James, a son-in-law, Mr. George Riker, and three grand sons, Freeman, Emery and Ivan Marquis. The interment was at 12 o'clock in the beautiful Bethel Chapel cemetery. To the bereaved companion, the children, and all relatives, this community extends its heartfelt sympathy.
