Marquis was born in Highland county, Ohio, January 18, and died at her home in Chariton, Iowa, February 3, 1911, at the age of 69 years, 2 weeks and 2 days. When about fourteen years of age she came with her parents to Iowa and her home has always been in Clarke and Lucas counties. On July 22, 1866, she was married to Mr. James Welch who survives her and mourns her death and the loss of all that makes a home for him, in as much as they had no children. She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, one brother, Mr. S. N. Marquis of Clarke county and two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Short of Clear Water, Neb., besides a host of relatives and friends. Mrs. Welch was converted when about 15 years of age and united with the Church of Christ in the Christian Union at Bethel Chapel. She and her husband were charter members of this church and it was their hope to retain their membership here during life and then to be buried here. Death came as a great relief to Mrs. Welch. For more than twelve years she has been an almost con (-stant sufferer) of the most severe pain and the manner in which she endured this was a marvel to her relatives and friends. A host of friends sympathize with the husband in his loss. On account of the sickness of Mr. Welch at the time of her death, he was not able to accompany the remains here for burial, the body of Mrs. Welch was placed in a vault in Chariton and on Sunday, March 19, 1911, it was brought to Bethel Chapel where the funeral was preached and by Rev. A. F. Dorrell and the remains tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery to await the resurrection morn. A large crowd was present at the funeral and deeply sympathize with the bereaved ones.
