Grimes, passed away at 5:25 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, 1901, at the family home in Vliets, Kansas, from the effects of a fall, which lead to pneumonia. Samuel R. Grimes was born on Sept. 18, 1884, at Elrod, Indiana. At the age of 19 he joined teh Methodist Church at Old Bethel. On February 9, 1860 he was married to Catherine Carrington. Grimes, passed away at 5:25 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, 1901, at the family home in Vliets, Kansas, from the effects of a fall, which lead to pneumonia. Samuel R. Grimes was born on Sept. 18, 1884, at Elrod, Indiana. At the age of 19 he joined teh Methodist Church at Old Bethel. On February 9, 1860 he was married to Catherine Carrington. To this union was born nine children; two daughters and one son preceded him in death. Mr. Grimes taught school in Indiana for eleven years. About thirty-six years ago he met with an accident which cost him his right limb. In Indiana he held several county offices in Ripley county. In 1885 he brought his family to Kansas and resided the first year with J.H. Walker in a house about twenty rods west of where M.R. Ewing now lives. He then moved to the old Kenworthy farm where he lived for a year. He decided to build a house on the southeast part of J.H. Walker's farm, and after he began the work T.S. Ewing bought the farm on which Vliets now stands and layed out the town site, naming it Ewingsport. Mr Grimes then decided to buy lots, and the house was the first one in Vliets. He figured in various ways in first developement of Vliets. Through his efforts a post office was established with Mr. Grimes as postmaster. Trains did not stop there then and a mail catcher was used He served as postmaster for ten years. George Reust built a shop which was the next building in Vliets. The Union Commercial Company was organized and the railway company put a boxcar as a depot there. Mr. Grimes and his wife kept a boarding house during the early improvement of Vliets. About six weeks ago he slipped and fell on icy sidewalk, spraing his hip. He was compelled to take to his bed from which he never recovered. He seemed about to recover from his fall when his lungs became congested and was not able to withstand the attack. Funeral services were held on Monday December 31 at 2 pm at the Methodist Chruch with Reverend Webb in charge of the service, burial was held in the Vermillion Cemetery.
