Osage, Girard, died at the Girard Hospital at 8:15 a.m. Friday. He had been ill the past year and hospitalized only one day. Born Jan. 27, 1875 near Cherokee, Mr. Montee moved to Girard when still young and had lived there ever since. He was one of the first conductors of the streetcars on the Pittsburg Frontenac Suburban Railroad which later grew to be the Joplin and Pittsburg Railroad. He worked as a conductor for 27 years. Mr. Montee once related how the outlaw Jesse James rode into their yard at their home near Cherokee when he was still a small boy. The outlaw was with two other men and demanded some matches of Montee's mother. On Aug. 1913, Mr. Montee married Miss Luellen Vance in Carl Junction. He and his wife celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1963. Mr. Montee served as Crawford County Treasurer during the years 1923 to 1927 and was the first county treasurer to serve in the new courthouse in Girard in 1923. He won that election by the greatest majority up to that time. Mr. Montee was a member of the Girard Presbyterian Church and had for many years served as a Trustee. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Luellen Montee, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth D. Conrad, 709 N. Joplin, Pittsburg; and Mrs. Nadine McClanahan, Orlando, Fla.; two sons, Ralph C. Montee, Tulsa, Okla.; and Theodore Vance Montee, Bainsbridge, Fla.; and two brothers, William Valentine (Vol) Montee, Laurel, Mont.; and Dr. C.M. Montee, Pittsburg. One son, Norris Montee, was killed in service in 1943 in the Pacific. Funeral services for Mr. Montee will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Girard Presbyterian Church with the Rev. V. Dean Stephens officiating. Active pallbearers will be Tom Cordry, Bob Burns, Montee Everitt, Kenneth Evans, Karl Zettl, William Gifford, Truman Hughes Jr. and William Swart. Honorary pallbearers will be Pat O'Reilly, Walter Wayland, Harry Colburn, Charles Everitt, Perry Burns and Albert Kirkpatrick. Interment will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Pittsburg with the W.D. Smith Funeral Home of Girard in charge of the arrangements. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the W.D. Smith Chapel in Girard.
