In 1864, John Newton Shandy was lured by the Colorado gold rush and left his family to seek his fortune. [Some indicate he left his family in the area of Wakefield, KS, but I question that since there appear to be no family ties in that area in 1864 and evidence they were in Nebraska before 1880.] He was to send for his family when he had mined $500 in gold. He reportedly died in Silver Spring, Colorado. His death is supported by the Atchison County Journal, 11 Apr 1907: "North Star Lodge No. 157 A.F. & A. M., published resolutions of respect and sympathy on the death of John N. Shandy who died at Central City, Colorado Ter., February 18, 1864. The committee was F.M. Thompson, Peter Smith and I.N. White." In Sept 2006 Vernon Vinzant searched on the internet for any record of John's death and found none. An area identified as "Silver Springs" is near Central City, CO, but does not appear to be a town site nor any cemetery. Further, the reference to Central City would indicate he was not looking for gold in the area of Denver/Cherry Creek, but further to the west--this is consistent, because while gold was initially discovered in the Denver area, by 1864 the search had spread to the west into the Central City area. In the 1850 census, John Newton Shandy and his family are in Dubois County, Bembridge Twp, Indiana. In the 1860 Federal Census they are in Benton, Atchison Co., Missouri. By 1870, John is deceased and Sarah is in Atchinson Co., Missouri. By 1880, she is in Dickinson Co., Kansas, with her children. Sarah (Payne) Shandy is the daughter of Thomas and Lydia (Lindsey) Payne (both died Dubios Co., Indiana). James Thomas and "Dora" (Brothwell) Shandy are my great grandparents; their daughter and my grandmother, Jeanette Shandy married Peter Hostetler. John Sidney Shandy married Lydia Hostetler/Hochstetler, sister to Peter Hostetler.
