Pease - Couple Would Have Observed 71st Wedding Anniversary in February - Colfax – Mrs. Hugh G. Pease, 90, wife of Colfax's last surviving Civil War veteran, died today at 5 a.m. at her home on Front Street in Colfax. Death followed a 10-day illness of the flu. If death had not intervened, Mr. and Mrs. Pease would have celebrated their seventy-first wedding anniversary Feb. 27 – a record few Iowa couples have equaled. Mrs. Pease, one of the pioneers of Jasper county, came here with her parents in 1858. She was only nine years old when the family made the trip by covered wagon from Ohio to their new home in Iowa and located near Greencastle Sarah Ella Myers became the bride of Hugh G. Pease at Newton, Feb. 27, 1884. The latter had served for three years with Company D of the Iowa Fortieth during the Civil War and had been honorably discharged Aug. 19, 1865. The couple lived with Mr. Pease's parents for the first year, until he had cleared a 40-acre tract on parent's farm. They then built a house where they resided until retiring from the farm. They moved from the farm to Colfax 29 years ago and had since resided in the same house on Front Street. Surviving relatives include her husband, Hugh Pease, who celebrated his ninety-fifth birthday anniversary Jan. 12; three sons, Frank and George Pease, living on the farm north of Colfax, and John Pease of Crannell, Calif., and two daughters, Maud Pease and Mrs. Nell Joplin, living at home. Three grandchildren, Hugh Pease who is in the United States Army, Joe Pease of Crannell, Calif., Mrs. Helen Cabral of Merced, Calif., also survives. No funeral arrangements have been made. Newton Daily News - Friday, January 22, 1937 - Private Funeral Rites Announced For Mrs. Pease - Colfax – Private funeral services for Mrs. Hugh G. Pease, 90, wife of Colfax's lone surviving Civil War veteran, will be conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. from the home on Front Street. Rev. Theodore Morning, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, will be in charge. Interment will be in McKeever cemetery. Services are being held privately because of the poor health of her 95-year-old husband. Friends are asked to call at the house either Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning.
