CRANMORE GAGE DEAD WELL KNOWN JEFFERSON COUNTY PIONEER PASSED AWAY SUNDAY EVENING Mrs. Cranmore W. GAGE died about eight o'clock Sunday evening at her home on West Broadway after an illness extending over a period of several years and due to the natural decline which comes to one in ripe old age. Sarah Jane BLACK GAGE was born in Adams county, Ohio, November 6, 1828, and came from the old Convenanter stock. In 1841 she moved with her parents Moses and Jane BLACK to Brown county, Illinois, and three years later the family moved to Jefferson county locating on a farm in Des Moines township. She was the oldest of a family of six children. On September 12, 1855 Sarah J BLACK and Cranmore W. GAGE plighted their troth and were united in marriage. After a few years spent on the farm Mr. and Mrs. GAGE moved to Fairfield where they have since resided. For over half of a century they have made their home in and around Fairfield. They have seen the county transformed from a vast and unbroken prairie, inhabitated mostly by red men, into homes of a civilized people. They have seen Fairfield grow from a little trading point to one of the foremost of the smaller cities of the west. Until ill health came upon Mrs. GAGE she used to relate to her children and other relatives bits of her early life which never failed to interest. To Mr. and Mrs. GAGE were born six children, three sons and one daughter having preceded their mother in death. She leaves to mourn her departure her aged husband and two sons, Fred GAGE of Chicago and Charles H GAGE of this city. Mrs. GAGE had been a member of the Congregational church since early childhood and was one of the most faithful attendants to services of her church until ill health compeled her to remain at home. In her early life Mrs. GAGE was held in the highest regard by the members of the social sphere in which she moved and her presence was much in demand at society functions. Besides her own family two brothers Madison BLACK of Burns, Wyoming, and Walker M. BLACK of Des Moines, and two sisters Mrs. Rhoda BURKHART and Mrs. Perry KING, both of this city, are left to mourn her death. The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the residence, Rev. A.G. Graves, the Congregational pastor, will conduct the last service and the remains will be laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery.
