Daily Ledger Monday November 5, 1934 WALKER BLACK RITES SUNDAY Pioneer Buried in Evergreen Cemetery Here This Afternoon Des Moines, Ia., Nov. 5 - Funeral services for Walker M. BLACK, 85, pioneer Iowa insurance man, were held in Des Moines yesterday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock at Dunn's funeral home. The body was then taken to Fairfield, where burial with short services were in charge of Dr. Gilbert Voorhies and the Murray funeral directors. Mr. BLACK, who was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Moses C. BLACK, early settlers near Fairfield, died at his home on 1010 Nineteeth st. Friday after a three weeks illness. He first entered the loan insurance business in 1878 and soon became Missouri state agent for the State Insurance Co. of Des Moines. In 1895 he became Iowa state agent for the Harford Fire Insurance Co. of Hartford, Conn. In 1917 Mr. BLACE became an independent adjuster in the fire insurance field. He is survived by his widow and two children, C. H. BLACK and Mrs. Catherine Blossom PERTNING, all of Des Moines. Mr. BLACK was an uncle of Charles H. GAGE of Fairfield. ------ Note: The graves for Walker Black and Katherine Averill Black are not marked. There are two listings in this same plot for "2 babies". What happened to the second wife (if he did in fact remarry), Marsella MILLS, isn't known either. She evidently was not buried in this plot according to the cemetery superindendent when asked to verify these burials.
