Sarah Jane Davenpost (sic), daughter of John S. and Madora Davenpost (sic), was born in Mills county (sic), Ia., November 7, 1857, and died, the last of a family of eight, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dora Light, August 15, 1940, at the age of 82 years, 9 months, and 8 days. In 1860 her father disposed of his Iowa farms and invested the money in cattle and oxen. Crossing the river at Plattsmouth they joined a wagon train starting the trek to California. They arrived in California the following year, but lost most of their stock en-route. The family resided in Los Angeles county (sic), Cal., for a few years. At the close of the war they returned to Iowa, residing there until 1877, when the family came to Republic county (sic), locating on a farm in Rose Creek township. In 1879 she was united in marriage to Iverson A. Jefferson, at the village of Ida. To them were born four children: John C. of Haddam, Mrs. W.E. Frame, who died at Rogers, Ark., in 1922, Mrs. Dora Light and Mrs. L.G. Ramsbottom of Munden. There are 13 living grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death on October 9, 1912. She lived 63 years of her life on farms in Republic and Washington counties. In this time, she witnessed the transition of these counties from a sparsely populated prairie of dug-outs and soddies to communities of productive farms and prosperous towns, from the prairie trail to the paved highway, from the cradle and reaper to the combine and tractor. Her church affiliation was Methodist and she was a member of the church at Haddam. Her religion was vital. She believed strongly in repentance and conversion. Her faith was abiding. Her philosophy of life was simple - the race is to the swift, and God helps those who help themselves. Her delights were in rural life; the good earth, farms, field, and hills with cattle. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church (sic) in Munden, conducted by the Rev. F.L. Courter. Interment was made in the Ida cemetery (sic).
