Mr. Davenport was a pioneer resident of this community, having moved here with his family in 1878. He had been in failing health for several months, and a few weeks ago went to Tacoma, Wash., to spend the winter. He became seriously ill shortly after he arrived there. OBITUARY Wm. H. Davenport was born January 1st, 1852, in Utah Territory, and departed this life January 23, 1935, at the home of his son, Harry Davenport, in Tacoma, Washington, aged 83 years and 22 days. When a young lad he came to Iowa, and there he married Sarah Goodwin, on January 1st, 1872, and in the fall of 1878, he with his family moved to Republic county (sic), Kansas, making their home on a farm four and a half miles southeast of Chester. Mr. and Mrs. Davenport were pioneers in this country and much credit was due them for their untiring efforts, as day by day they proved themselves successful at farming and good citizens. On retiring from the farm they moved to Chester, where they made their home until the death of his good wife, and then he made his home with his son, Albert Davenport. He became a member of the Church of Christ at the age of seventeen and lived a consistent Christian life. He leaves to mourn, six children: four sons and two daughters: J.W. Davenport, of Munden, Kans.; A.H. and A.R. Davenport, of Chester; Harry Davenport, of Tacoma, Wash.; Mary Craig of Plattsmouth; and Lizzie Gregory of Chester. His wife and one son, Ross, preceded him in death. He also leaves one sister, Sarah Jefferson of Haddam, Kan., and three brothers, Frank Davenport of Chester; J.J. Davenport of Plattsmouth; and Charley Davenport of Pocasset, Okla. A score of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a host of neighbors and friends.
