Auburn, died Sunday morning, August 23,1992, at St Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids after a short illness. He was born May 2, 1918, in Mt Auburn, the son of Horner and Velma Irene (Byous) Coots. He continued to live in the Mt Auburn area and graduated from the Mt Auburn High School. On March 3, 1941; he married Gwendolyn Smalley, and the couple moved to Cedar Rapids for employment. After World War II, he was declared enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force, from which he was discharged in 1946. He then began operating heavy machinery for area employers, and later entered rock quarry work for the Vinton Lime and Rock Company, where he was superintendent for five years. In 1958, Floyd Coots started his own business, which later became Coots Materials Company. He retired in 1985, and sold the business to his son, David. After his retirement, he enjoyed wood working and making gifts for family and friends. He was a member of the Mt Auburn Fire Department, the Mr. Auburn School Board, the Mt. Auburn city council, the American Legion, La Societe 40 & 8, the Izaak Walton League, the Iowa Lime Producers, and a former member of the Mt Auburn Boosters. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Norman, one brother, Loyde; and one granddaughter, Rachel. He is survived by his wife Gwendolyn; three sons, Russell (and wife LeeAndra) of Mt Auburn, David (and wife Mary) of Vinton, and Dennis (and wife Jana) of Bettendorf; one daughter, Ruth Ann (and husband Mike) Intlekofer of Wyoming, MN; three sisters, Dorothy Long of Cedar Rapids, Doris Ehlers of Independence, and Dorla (and husband Orville) Wieland of Wesley; and 10 grandchildren. A funeral service for Floyd Coots will be held Wednesday, August 26, 1992, at 10:30a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Mt Auburn, with Military Rites conducted by the Emil H. Dutler Post #177 of the American Legion in Mt Auburn. Burial will be held at the Mt Auburn Cemetery
