Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Burial in Riverside Cemetery Lyle Leroy Leo Brady died peacefully in his sleep on February 2, 2009 at St. Mary's TCU. Lyle was born April 25, 1922 at the family farmhouse north of Blunt, South Dakota. Lyle's family moved to Pierre in 1927. He attended the Pierre School System and graduated in 1942. Following high school, Lyle went to California to work for a defense contractor. He joined the Air Force in 1943 and became a flight engineer on a B-24 Liberator. He completed numerous missions over Germany before being shot down and taken prisoner by the Germans in October of 1944. As a prisoner of war, he was marched from one camp to another to keep ahead of the advancing American and Russian forces and was not liberated until May 1945. It was only late in his life that his family learned from members of his crew that he was instrumental in saving lives of others on the plane. Lyle remained in touch with many of the crew until their deaths. Lyle was discharged from the Air Force in October 1945. He also served in the Korean War with the South Dakota National Guard. He was stationed in Alaska. Lyle attended barber school in North Dakota. He barbered until he went to work at the Ben Franklin store for Will and Harriet Brown. He learned many things from them and went on to own a men's clothing store which eventually became known as Brady's Menswear. On November 5, 1966 he married Lillian Schank. They loved to dance and travel when they could get away. They worked and struggled side by side at the clothing store until they retired from the clothing business in the late eighties. He often said Lilly was the love of his life and found it very difficult without her since her death. Lyle worked for Green Thumb helping other retirees find jobs. He greatly enjoyed working with both his clients and the people at Job Service. Of these, the family would like to say a special thank you to Nancy Stenson and Steve Smith who remained Lyle's loyal and consistent friends. They visited him and kept him involved until the very end of his life. Lyle loved to play golf and garden. He was involved in the Pierre community throughout the years. In addition to being a member of the Chamber of Commerce when he was in business, Lyle was a Fourth degree Knight in the Knight's of Columbus where he served as both Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. He was a member in the Pierre Fire Department, the VFW, the American Legion and the Elks Club. Lyle was blessed with the friendships of Jerry Erbe and Harry Simmons who helped him maintain a quality of life while in his home that would not have been possible without their friendship. Deep appreciation must also be expressed for Sister Mariette Miller who brought Lyle great joy, laughter and peace in the last months of his life.
