Read More	Stratford Courier June 16, 1921 (Front Page) 15 YEAR OLD BOY COMMITS SUICIDE HERE BY HANGING The tragic death of Sherman Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Anderson southeast of Stratford, was the cause of the deepest consternation when the news went around. His lifeless body had been found about nine o'clock the night before hanging from the rafters in the haymow of the barn on the farm. About an hour before the body was found the young man had gone to the barn to finish some of the chores. When he did not return at the time that it was thought the work should have been finished, his father and mother started looking for him. They visited other buildings nearby and then went to the barn. A thorough search of the first floor of the barn was made and then they went to the haymow and it was here that they discovered his lifeless body hanging from one of the highest rafters. The shock to the parents was terrible and in the hopes that there might yet be life within the body and then they cut the hitch strap to which he was hanging and lowered the body and then they learned that he had been dead for some time. Believing that he had met with foul play they called the county coroner and he empanelled a jury consisting of Elmer Carlson and Alfred Erickson, neighboring farmers, and G.F. Leonard of Webster City, who accompanied Coroner Foster to the farm home. The jury went over the matter carefully even searching about the farm for strangers who might have committed the crime but they failed to find anything whatever and rendered a verdict that they boy had taken his own life by hanging. The young man had used two hitch straps looping them over the rafter in the very peak of the barn roof and placing the other end in a slip knot about his neck jumped to his death. The parents are absolutely unable to account for their son taking his life in this manner. His home life was happy and there seems to be no reason in the world why the young man, who in two days more would have been 15 years old, should have chosen to take his own life. He was unusually bright in his school work and had finished successfully all the eighth grade tests. He was cheerful and seemingly contented in every way and was always pleasant to everyone. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson are among the most prominent of our farmer folks and they are heartbroken over the death of their son. Besides his folks he leaves a small sister and a baby brother. Stratford Courier June 16, 1921 Anderson (Contributed to The Courier) Sherman Augustus Anderson was born at Stratford, June 11, 1906; he died at his home June 9, 1921. He was thus almost 15 years old at the time of his death, lacking only two days. He was the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Anderson of Stratford. A baby brother, who died three years ago, preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his memory his parents, a sister and a brother - Ansel and Russell. A great number of friends lament and mourn his passing. He came to his end in a very tragic manner. His death is shrouded in mystery. It seems impossible to account for it. It naturally adds to the grief of his father and mother. To lose him was hard, but the mode of his death fills full their measure of sorrow and suffering. Sherman was in every respect a normal boy. He was intelligent and successful in school. About a year ago he passed in all his studies in the eighth grade. He was gifted with a cheerful temperament. He was unusually courteous both at home and in company. In the home he was helpful and obedient. He dearly loved his sister and baby brother. He was a member of the Catechism Class of 1920. In the class work he proved himself a bright student and seemed to grasp and appreciate religious things in a manner that was unusual for a boy of his age. After the graduation of the class he took the Lord's Supper at the sacramental service and united with the church. We cannot doubt that he was a fine, clean and noble boy. Those who knew him must have that impression. And we believe firmly that his soul is with God who gave it. We would remind the bereaved father and mother of the great goodness and wisdom of God. He careth for you. This is no sign that he has forgotten you or that he is not near. Nothing can handicap him. We are his offspring and in his keeping. It is well for us to remember that he has said: "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." In hours of bereavement like this it is our privilege to bow to the will of God and be at peace. Happy are you if you can say, "The Lord gave, the Lord took away, blessed be the name of the Lord." "O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home! Under the shadow of thy throne Still may we dwell secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, And our defense is sure. Tim, like an ever-rolling steam, Bears all its sons away; They fly, forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day. O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come; Be thou our guide while life shall last, And our eternal home." Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the South Marion Church conducted by Rev. Carl Jensen and the remains laid to rest in the South Marion Cemetery.
