Description	:	Shirley Hatch, 71, of Pierre died on Thursday, October 11, at the Golden Living Center in Pierre. Shirley Starkenburg was born on 4 September 1936 in Alton, Iowa to Fred and Bernadette Starkenburg. Growing up in Alton, Shirley was active in the Dutch Community's various festivals, participated in high school marching band, and enjoyed the small town life with her friends and family. Shirley Starkenburg was born on 4 September 1936 in Alton, Iowa to Fred and Bernadette Starkenburg. Growing up in Alton, Shirley was active in the Dutch Community's various festivals, participated in high school marching band, and enjoyed the small town life with her friends and family. After graduating from Alton High School, Shirley earned a teaching certificate from Northern College of Orange City, Iowa in 1956; and began working in Mason City as a primary school teacher. She later transferred to the Sioux Falls, South Dakota school district. Shirley continued to take classes at the Northern University of Iowa in Cedar Falls during her teaching assignment summer breaks. In 1964, Shirley earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Primary Education. In 1962, Shirley met John Hatch during a dance in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They were united in marriage on 5 July 1965. Mr. and Mrs. John Hatch moved to Pierre, South Dakota in 1966. Shirley continued to work as a school teacher until the birth of her first son, Philip, in 1967. She later retired from the South Dakota State Driver Licensing Division. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother and sister, Keith and Cathrine. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, John Hatch; her two sons, Philip and Jason; her daughter, Mary; and her five grandchildren, Lauren, Trevor, Miranda, Julia, and Leah. Shirley will truly be missed by the family she dedicated her life to. And most of all, for her unconditional love and patience that only a mother and wife can give. Although we are sorry to see her leave us, we cherish in our hearts that she is in a better place. Funeral Service will be Monday, October 15 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Countryside Hospice of Pierre or the Alzheimer's Research Foundation (1236 Ginger Crescent, Virginia Beach, VA 23453). Arrangements by Isburg Funeral Chapel.
