Always genial and cheerful he attracted and held friends who will sincerely mourn his untimely death. The Tipton Conservative, April, 1902 FRENCH The funeral of Shuler French was conducted from his late residence at 2 p.m. yesterday and was largely attended by friends and neighbors. Rev. Samuel Conybeare, pastor of the Presbyterian church, read the following obituary. We have assembled to perform the last sad rites over all that is mortal of Shuler French, who was born in Amsterdam, New York, on January 24, 1851. He was younger of a family of seven children, all of whom are now dead and none of whom lived to old age. One brother died a prisoner of war in Andersonville prison. When he was 12 years old he came with his parents and the rest of the family to Chicago, Ill., and for seventeen years Chicago was his home. In 1875 he married Julia Harris of Avoca, Iowa. After the brief period of three years she sickened and died, leaving no children. Four years later he was united in marriage to Louise Werlling, their wedding occurring on the 29th day of October, 1883, at Des Moines, Iowa. There have been born to them four children, two daughters and two sons, all of whom are living and present to mourn with the weeping widow in their common loss, and yet to comfort her in her sorrow as no other earthly friend is capable of doing. When about seventeen years of age young Shuler French turned to the hazardous occupation of railroading for a livelihood and in common with a large number of other railroad men fell a victim to the merciless iron monster which has mangled and crushed so many brave men beneath its wheels. November 13, 1890, he was performing the duties assigned him at West Superior, Wis., when he fell beneath the cars, which resulted in the loss of his lower limbs, and though his life was spared for a time it was only for a time, for there is no doubt as to the fact that his premature death was primarily due to that lamentable occurrence, because of its dire effect upon his nervous system. Yet, his life was spared for another eleven years, mercifully spared that he might cooperate with the mother in the training of their family. At the time of this accident the family were living in West Superior, but upon his recovery he brought them in June, 1891, to a farm near Tipton, where they lived until three years ago, when they moved to town. Last January he received a paralytic stroke and for several weeks was seriously ill, but rallied again and was able to be about attending to his business as usual when he was once more seized, this time with a fatal illness. He quietly passed away last Sunday afternoon, August 6, 1902, at four o'clock, aged 51 years, 2 months and 18 days. No man could ever meet Mr. French without being impressed with his cheerful disposition, his bright, sunny manner. It was my privilege to labor for five years and more among railroad men and he seemed to me to be a typical railroad man, big hearted, whole souled, uncomplaining, brave. Mr. French was a constant sufferer but bravely bore his pain without murmuring or repining. In the home he was one of the most devoted of husbands and fathers--none could be more so--and it is this fact that makes his loss so keenly felt. His tender thoughtfulness was constantly being manifested. the wide world has heard of Mr. McKinley's solicitude for his wife and the he news of the attempt upon his life should be gently broken to her. Thus it was with Mr. French when he was injured. His first thought was of his wife and his first request that the news should be considerately conveyed to her. He was wrapt up in his family, he lived for them--he denied himself for them. Great must be their sorrow in his death, and I am very sure I speak the truth when I say that the hearts of this whole community go out to them in the deepest sympathy in this sore bereavement. After reading the foregoing Mr. Conybeare preached a brief sermon from John 18:7 on the mystery of Providence. Rev. F. P. Shaffer assisted with the service and a choir composed of Mrs. McBurney, Miss Goudy and Messrs. Lower and Shaffer rendered appropriate music. The interment was at Masonic cemetery.
